The deadline is soon apparoaching for Creative Practice so time is crucial. During the course of this week I have experimented with more screen printing. The process i used for this method was creating a stencil of the image and printing it that way, rather than using a photograph ( this is more time consuming ). When i previously experimented with silk screen, I used paper I had made. This gave me a very interesting and exciting texture which I find works well conceptually and aesthetically.
The next stage of development is to create more paper and thus progress futher with screen printing. My intension is to produce a multiple of prints illustrating an abstracted and simplfied image of books, representing the idea that books within the campus are there merely to look at and not be used.
More work is deffinitely required in order to achieve the desired effect and appearance that I am trying to achieve.
Moving on to 3D....
This week proved to be the most successful and productive class to date!! During Monday class i began to experiment with wood and some foam material (it's name has completely gone). My main focus was not so much on creating a structured artwork but more so about manipulating the material. Still unsure as to what material I am going to use of how I am going to create that artwork is still up for debate but i'll get there slowly but surely. I'm surprised to say that I am enjoying the 3D work, especially since it's not really my strongest point.....learn something new every day.
Here are just a list of materials that I have worked with:
-Wire
-Paper
-Wood
-Sugar
-Spaghetti
-Foam
-Cardboard

Moving on
There are approximately 6 weeks to go until the hand in of the second brief. During our class visit to the new campus I took a variety of photographs in and around the building in order to gain some inspiration. What particularly stood out for me was the contrast between the contemporary nature of the campus but the lack of tradtional elements such as book etc.
During the initial stages of research I did not feel a personal connection to the campus, which made me question what i sort of artwork I would create. Thankfully this did not hinder my progression with the project. The basis for this project is the contrast between modern technology and traditional methods of education in relation to the new contemporary build. My main focus is intended to be on the campus library and how the lack of books deters from the personal and intimate relationship within education....you are what you read.
Moving on from Creative Practice to PDP:
This week proved to be the most ineresting class yet. We were issued with a brief titled "My Pathway, My Career- Research Activity". In response to this we are to undertake a period of independent research to indentify and evaluate contemporary art, design and craft practices, opportunities and contexts. Throughout the course of this brief which will last until March 2012 we will be able to expand our knowledge and expertice within in our chosen pathway, which in turn will hopefully make clear which direction we wish to take our degree in 3rd year.
Moving on again, from PDP to Contextual Studies:
During our contextual studies our minds were blown with a lecture on writers/theorists such T.S.Elliot, Michel Foucault, Roland Barthes and Harold Bloom. Again, having no real clue as to what the relationship was between this class and our creative practice, we found it's purpose was to enhance our critical thinking. In relation to this we have been asked to produce an essay on any subject matter that is of interest to ourselves. Throughout the course of the lectures we have talked about pop culture, capitalism, semiotics, mythologies etc; interesting but confusing. My intended proposal is to look at Guerilla Art and it's relationship to politics and wider society.
More development of these essays will be posted at a later date along side further progression of the creative practice brief.

New brief, new opportunities
Since the completion and hand in of the last brief we have now moved onto a new brief which asked us to produce a creative response to the new Alloa Campus. Working outwith the boundaries of our own creative industry building and working within an area of unfamiliar suurounding, i find very interesting. Since the issue of the brief we have visited the new Alloa campus in order to get a feel for the building, to allow for photo documentation of the building but to also spark some inspiration.
What struck me most about the the campus was the inerior of the building and the clinical feel that is vibrant throughout. On my initial entrance to the campus I was drawn to the geometric shapes that appear to be the focal point of the builidng. This led me on to consider working with the interiors of the campus. The campus is very much contemporary; from the materials used for the interiors to the use of computeres in relation to books distributed with the campus library. My first thoughts were to create a series of prints incorporating binary and and words to represent the concept: Education, lost in translation.
Finally, my current thoughts are leading me towards the theme of translation and how through different langauges we interprate a different meaning. I intend to create an artwork which represents how we learn now, in the past and in the years to come but allows the viewer to interact with the peice. These are just initial ideas and are open to futher development and interpretation.
Intended Processes:
Printmaking
Paper making
Artist book
