21.9.11 Pathways and Context...Artist Statement: What i try to achieve...

The themes of my work concentrate upon the issues that we as a society associate with in everyday life and how we chose deal with them. Through my work I tend to focus on issues such as social and political that we as a society often chose to ignore. Within this i look into the concept of identity, but more specifically loss of identity. The way in which we as a society can be stripped of our identity within seconds or how it can effect just one single person.

The main aim of my work is to encourage the viewer to realise that these issues cannot be ignored and must be acknowledged. It invites the viewer to consider why we chose not to accept them and how we can learn to change our perception.

My primary concern is portraying a concept through the use of painting and printmaking in a way which allows the viewer to relate to and understand the message I am trying to convey. In achieving this successfully I try to take a symbolic or metaphorical approach rather than looking at the literal meaning behind the concept.

In order to achieve this I undertake extensive research into the concept, through photo documentation, media experimentation and personal life experiences. I aim to create an aesthetically pleasing artwork but one which also works conceptually.
